Confused by what your puppy is doing....

Just as the saying "a chip off the old block" often holds true for humans, it can apply to dogs as well. Puppies that are well-socialized are more likely to come from dogs that are well-socialized.

A basic part of a pup's socialization is based on their mother's attitude--relaxed or skittish--toward people. The way you interact with your new puppy can play a big role, too. Playing, petting, and talking with your pup can help him or her develop the "people skills" needed to be a good member of the family and the neighborhood.

While weaning for puppies can take place at six to seven weeks, they are still learning important skills from their littermates as their mother gradually leaves them for longer periods of time. Puppies that stay with their litter for at least three months are more likely to develop good social skills as they act as role models for each other. The earliest any puppy should leave its mother and siblings is after 8 weeks and only if they have been fully weaned and eating dry kibble on their own for at least a week and are cleared by my veterinarian.

When puppies are separated from their littermates too early, they often fail to develop key social skills, such as sending and receiving signals, the hierarchy process (who is in charge), how far to go in play-wrestling, what mouthing pressure is acceptable (inhibited bite), and so forth. Play is important for puppies. It increases their dexterity, and social interaction, and helps them to learn their boundaries.

Through these interactions with their mother and littermates, puppies learn what being a dog is all about. During the first eight weeks of age, skills not acquired may be lost forever.
Most dogs are considered puppies for up to two years of age, though puppyish behavior may end sooner or last longer in some breeds. The stages listed below are essential and fairly constant. However, dogs are open to new knowledge and training well beyond the puppy years.

Here are some general guidelines for puppies' stages of development.

The neonatal stage: Birth to two weeks
The senses of touch and taste are immediately present after birth.
The mother has the most influence over the puppy.

The transitional stage: Two to four weeks
Mother and littermates continue to influence a puppy's behavior.
The sense of hearing and smell develop, eyes open and the teeth begin to appear.
A puppy begins to stand, walk a little, wag its tail, and bark.
A puppy's eyesight is well-developed by the fourth or fifth week.

The socialization stage: Three to twelve weeks
A puppy needs occasions to meet other pets and people during this stage.
By three to five weeks, play becomes important as a puppy becomes aware of his or her surroundings, companions (both people and dogs), and relationships.
The influence of the puppy's littermates increases at four to six weeks as he or she learns more about being a dog.
From four to twelve weeks, a puppy's interaction with people becomes more influential. With littermates, the puppy learns to play, develops social skills, learns the inhibited bite, explores his or her social boundaries and hierarchy, and improves physical coordination.
By five to seven weeks, a puppy needs positive human interaction as he or she develops curiosity and explores new experiences.
A puppy has full use of his or her senses by seven to nine weeks. A puppy is refining his or her coordination and physical ability, and can begin to be housetrained.
At eight to ten weeks, a puppy can experience real fear involving everyday objects and experiences. During this stage, a puppy needs support and positive reinforcement.
Enhancing responses, advancing social skills with littermates (proper contact), and investigating the surroundings and items takes place from nine to twelve weeks. This is a good time to begin elementary training as a puppy will begin to focus on people.

The ranking stage: Three to six months
Ranking (dominance and submission) within the household or "pack," including people, is seen and used by a puppy in this stage.
A puppy's play group, which may now include those of other species, becomes influential in his or her life.
Teething and chewing begins.
A puppy experiences another fear stage at four months of age, so be prepared with positive reinforcement and introductions to objects and situations.

The adolescence stage: Six to eighteen months
A puppy is most affected by human and dog "pack" members.
A puppy may challenge people as part of exploring his or her dominance in the "pack."
At seven to nine months, a puppy will begin exploring more of his or her territory, prompting a second chewing phase.
A puppy will experience the beginnings of sexual behavior if not spayed or neutered.lick to add text, images, and other content

Puppy Growth and Enrichment

BioSensor/Early Neurological Stimulation:
1-Tactile Stimulation: Tickle puppy between toes with Q-tip while holding in one hand.
2-Head Held Erect: Hold perpendicular (straight up and down in both hands) for 3-5 seconds.
3-Head Pointed Downward: Hold with head down in both hands for 3-5 seconds.
4-Supine: Hold in hand with back on hand and facing upward for 3-5 seconds.
5-Thermal Stimulation: Use damp cooled towel in refrigerator and place pup on it for 3-5 seconds.
BENEFITS:
Improved cardio, stronger heart beats, stronger adrenal glands, higher tolerance to stress, higher resistance to disease, more active than non-stimulated puppies, better problem solving skills than non-stimulated puppies.
                                                            ACTIVITY CENTER:
PUPPIES HAVE  VARIETY OF ITEMS TO PLAY AND EXPLORE, SUCH AS SNUFFLE MAT, SLIDE, TUNNEL, HIDE A TOY, TUG ROPES, BALLS FOR FETCHING, AND MANY MORE TO PROMOTE DISCOVERY, PROBLEM SOLVING, AND EXPLORATION.
                                                                       SOCIALIZATION:
PUPPIES ARE HANDLED, LOVED, AND INTRODUCED TO NEW THINGS FOR DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIAL SKILLS AND PROPER MANNERS.  THEY ARE WELL ADJUSTED TO HUMAN TOUCH AND COME TO LOVE IT.
                                                                     LITTER TRAINING
PUPPIES ARE LITTER TRAINED AND WEATHER PERMITTING TRANSITION PROCESS FOR OUTSIDE POTTY TRAINING.
BEGINNINGS OF CRATE ACQUISITION TO BEGIN AS SOON AS ADDITION IS COMPLETED SINCE THERE WILL BE A HUGE AREA FOR THE PUPPIES PLUS A GROOMING SECTION WITH A PROFESSIONAL GROOMING TUB, PROFESSIONAL HYDRAULIC GROOMING TABLE AND A PART-TIME GROOMER FOR PUPPIES AND TO BUILD CLIENTELE UP FOR GROOMING APPOINTMENTS (DEPENDENT ON COVID SITUATION BUT POSSIBLY DROP OFF AND PICK UP OUTSIDE SO NO ONE COMES INTO THE HOME OR ADDITION TO HOME).

I HAVE MY PUPPY BUT WHAT OTHER SHOTS AND CHECK-UPS ARE NEEDED?

ALL PUPPIES COME VETERINARIAN CHECKED WITH FIRST PUPPY SHOT (DHPP) WHICH IS TYPICALLY GIVEN JUST BEFORE  GOING TO NEW HOME BUT NEEDS ARE BASED ON AGE YOU GET YOUR PUPPY:

GENERAL GUIDELINE:
7 WEEKS: DHPP (distemper, adenovirus [hepatitis], parainfluenza, and parvovirus)  OPTIONAL: Bordetella
10 WEEKS: DHPP (distemper, adenovirus [hepatitis], parainfluenza, and parvovirus) OPTIONAL: Influenza, Leptospirosis, Bordetella, Lyme disease  based on geographical location
13 WEEKS: DHPP (distemper, adenovirus [hepatitis], parainfluenza, and parvovirus) OPTIONAL: Influenza, Leptospirosis, Bordetella, Lyme disease  based on geographical location
16 WEEKS: Rabies

Then yearly exams for heartworm testing and annual check up to get heartworm protection.  I use Simparica Trio for heartworm, fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites.   Rabies is yearly the first year then goes to every 3 years for most states.

Make sure to get your health checkup scheduled before getting your puppy to meet that 3 business day requirement for health check to validate health guarantee.

Potty Training

As a general rule puppies can control their bladder one hour per month of age, i.e. a 2 month old can control bladder for 2 hours maximum.
Using a crate at night and anytime you must be away for shorter periods during the day to be sucessful with potty training. DO NOT use crate as a means of punishment and do not keep them in crate all the time (this will cause poor social skills)
Do not allow puppies to have free roam of the house since it will seem like a huge yard to the puppy (or bathroom area) When the puppy is roaming around with you in the house take a 2 month old puppy out to potty every 30-45 minutes. A rule of thumb is take the maxiumu length a puppy can control bladder and take outside one more time than that each timeframe (example is a 2 month old can control bladder for 2 hours so take the puppy out 3 times for every 2 hours and follow for each age group)
A puppy's sphincter muscles (butt muscles) aren't fully developed until 12 weeks of age so puppies could have accidents until that time then aggressive potty training can begin.
A puppy's bladder is not fully developed  until 4-6 months so complete potty training so it is unrealistic to expect a puppy to be completely potty trained until that age.
The most important component  is to praise the puppy for good behavior and speak firmly  while redirecting the puppy to the correct place to potty. A key aspect is consistency .

                                                                 Litter Training
An excellent beginning (used by myself so the puppies                                                                 will come litter trained)
Puppies are started between 3-4 weeks (as soon as they begin walking) having a litter  box to begin the potty training process.
                   How Does That Work??
1-Dog litter box has a dip so the puppies can walk into the box.
2-Use Pine Pellets (NOT actual litter) due to the smell of outdoors.
3-The puppies will naturally gravitate toward the box and begin using it themselves.
4-By the time the puppies are 6 weeks they are litter trained.
5-Remember to keep the box clean and changed as often as needed.
                   Transitioning to Outside Pottying:
1-Buy a crate large enough to place a litter box (a small one if needed)-the ones with two doors is best. This will only be for the first week or so for the Cotons.  Oftentimes they do not even need this transition period.
2-The use of the litter box will help with the crate training and will prevent middle of the night walks outside until the puppy is old enough for sphincter muscles to be fully developed (12 weeks).
3-When puppy is old enough to have no accidents or use the litter box at night it can come out.
4-Take the puppy outside every 1 to 1 1/2 hours for the first couple of weeks (8-10 weeks); then every 2-2 1/2 hours (11 weeks); then every 3-3 1/2 hours (12 weeks).  By this time your puppy should have the pattern developed as a learned behavior but remember the puppy has just matured enough for sphincter muscles and bladder to be fully developed.
5-Be more firm and use verbal correction as needed.
6-Consistency will help you get the puppy completely potty trained to go outside.

Adjustment

Puppies take time to adjust to their new homes and environments.  Remember it is a complete change to them...it does not mean they do not love you but simply trying to find their place.  Most puppies adjust slowly and warm up to their new family, home, and if other pets are present those as well. Expect the process to take anywhere from 1-3 days.
Always watch closely to make sure they are eating during this adjustment phase so they will not become sick from lack of food which keeps their sugar levels normal and provides the needed energy.
As always if your puppy is not eating and becomes lethargic take to your veterinarian as sugar levels may be low.  Feel free to contact me to discuss first if desired.  If sugar levels are not too low rubbing syrup on their gums, roof of their mouth and tongue can elevate sugar levels to encourage food consumption which will correct mild low sugar levels.

DEVELOPMENTALLY PUPPIES LIVERS CANNOT STORE SUGAR UNTIL THEY ARE  12 WEEKS OF AGE.

ALSO SPHINCTER MUSCLES ARE NOT FULLY DEVELOPED UNTIL THEY ARE 12 WEEKS OF AGE SO POTTY TRAINING PRIOR TO THIS AGE IS MORE OF A BEHAVIORAL TRAINING PROCESS BUT IS GREAT TO BEGIN THIS BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION PROCESS.
Puppies that are indicated as being potty trained or almost potty trained will have some adjustment to their new scheudule so there may be minor accidents.  It is important to not let new puppies have roam of the house until they are completely potty trained according to your schedule.

How often should I bathe my puppy

Bathing a puppy/dog too frequently will strip the natural oils out of their skin, which could lead to skin issues. The best option is to bathe your puppy/dog no more than once weekly.
If they do not smell foul and appear clean for the most part, you might want to consider bathing only twice per month or even once monthly. A good rule of thumb is if they don't appear to need a bath, they probably don't. This is especially true for Coton de Tulear. Poodles seem to need a bath about every two weeks.

I use Midnight White shampoo for the Coton de Tulear. It is a whitening shampoo and really does the trick. The food I feed them keeps the tear staining away but if you have an issue with that the Envy Eye kit which you can get from Amazon is a good option.

I use a darkening shampoo or bronze luster for my poodles. It keeps their color bright and deep in color.

Sugar Issues (Hypoglycemia)

SIGNS of Hypoglycemia (drop in sugar levels): Lack of appetitie, Lack of energy (simply wants to sleep), Weakness.
This is when to act promptly to avoid the situation getting worse and potentially lethal leading to death or exceedingly unnecessary expensive veternarian costs.
A quick simple fix is to rub pancake syrup or Karo Syrup on your puppies gums, roof of the mouth, and on the tongue twice wait 30 minutes repeat.  Then offer your puppy some food and water. You may have to hand feed your puppy until the puppy eats well on her/his own.
IT is CRUCIAL that puppies eat well since they cannot store sugar in their livers until they are over 12 weeks of age so all their sugar level comes from what they consume minus whatever energy they exert.
NONE of my puppies will leave for new homes until they have been naturally weaned by their mom, eating solid dry food on their own for a minimum of 5 -7 days with no issues.
Only feed puppies the food they are used to eating. My veterinarian recommends as an excellent food with lots of nutritional research behind it.
Good way to identify a good food from the others is the first ingredient will always be a meat not a by-product or meal. If Chicken is the first ingredient this is an excellent thing.
Also, new research has shown that no grain foods are not as good for your pets as first believed. Dogs need the grains to be completely healthy simply NOT ALL grains or by-products.

What is tear staining?

Many have asked what tear staining is. First, let's describe it since some people are unfamiliar with this matter. Tear staining is the reddish or brownish coloring around the eyes, mouth, and hind area. Tear staining does not indicate eye issues. All puppies are health checked and cleared by my veterinarian so any eye issues would be identified and disclosed to potential new owners. As always, my veterinarian is happy to discuss any of my puppy's comprehensive health checks.

After  extensive research we have decided to use Pawtree dogfood for our puppies and adult dogs. Another Coton breeder friend of mine uses this and states it minimizes all tear staining. We have had positive results ourselves.
CAUSE: The most common cause is the discharge of iron (or porphyrin) which is excreted from tears, saliva, urine, and feces. When puppies begin consuming solid food there is an abundance of iron which is broken down and secreted through the tears and saliva leading to the stains that are visible.  It is not uncommon for puppies to adapt and no longer have the staining. For those that have a lot of staining changing their food to a non-chicken based formula can help since Porphyrin is found in chicken.

Envy Eyes can help manage the tear staining and the starter kit is found on Amazon. They also have a foam cleaner which works nicely.

Exercise

For Puppies:
Puppies need five minutes of exercise per month of age up to twice a day. For example, a 3-month-old puppy will need
15 minutes of exercise while a 4-month-old will need 20 minutes.
Use low impact exercise like swimming or playing with small dog exercise balls.
Brief walks on a leash are acceptable but if your puppy  starts to sit down, give him time to rest.
If he does not start walking again, you may have to carry him home.
Puppies should not move into adult forms of exercise until the appropriate age:
Puppies that will be less than 25 lbs as an adult can move into adult forms of exercise at 9 months
Puppies that will be over 25 lbs but less than 100 lbs as an adult can move into adult forms of exercise at 14 months
Puppies that will be over 100 lbs as an adult can move into adult forms of exercise when over 18 months

For Adult Dogs:
Dogs need physical activity for at least 30 minutes up to 2 hours daily. The amount depends on the breed.
Dogs can engage in more strenous forms of activities such as jogging or running BUT not continuously at one time.
If your dog has health conditions adjust your dog's exercise based on this condition.

If puppies are exercised through the use of impact exercises before they are old enough for their joints to handle it could lead to health problems. Some of these problems can include hip dysplasia or other debilitating conditions brought about by excessive exercise at too early of an age.

When should I get my puppy spayed or neutered??

Spay/Neuter Information

There are so many difference of opinions as related to when to spay and neuter pets.  I have raised puppies since 2001 and my experience has shown that the best time would be prior to 6 months of age or right at 6 months of age and my veterinarian has the same opinion.
Reasons:
1-Time before dogs go through puberty.
2-Hormones are not being taken out of the dog contrary to many claims that it stunts growth.  Hormones still remain.....just not in elevated levels which relates to reproduction.
3-If a male dog goes through puberty and begins cocking his leg to urinate it has become a learned behavior regardless if you take the testicles away during neutering.  This will be extremely difficult to break the learned behavior.  Neuter before puberty, around 6 months of age, and he will not develop the habit of cocking his leg to urinate.
4-Reduces chances of developing prostate, testicular, mammary, or ovarian cancer or other forms of health issues related to changes due to puberty .
5-Pets will have more even temperments.
6-Pets will not have any need for hormone supplements due to having hormone deficiencies where dogs that have went through puberty can experience these issues and need hormone supplements, even if temporarily, and can exhibit behaviors atypical for the pet, including aggression.
7-No heat cycle to deal with for females (these last 3 weeks by the way-one week coming, one week in, and one week going) .
8-No rambling or roaming males due to searching for female dogs in heat.
9-It does not automatically lead to fat dogs.  Continue with proper eating habits and adequate exercise and dogs will remain fit.
10-Spaying and neutering are more cost effective than having to provide and care for unwanted puppies.  The cost to care for puppies and expectant mothers is much more costly than spaying.  Raising puppies take a serious commitment and willingness to care for them until proper homes have been located.  Reasonable breeders always plan for litters and know exactly who the parents are and the breed.  If you are not a reasonable breeder you probably will not know who the dad of the puppies are nor the breed of the puppies.  This is the reason I only approve full registration after asking additional questions.

My dog is fearful of the surgery cone...how to avoid anxiety after surgery

There are better options than those plastic cones to help your dog recover from surgery. I found the best option for my dogs has been the surgical outfits. If you get the good kind you don't even have to undress them then redress them for potty purposes. They are made with an opening to accommodate both urination and pooping without getting the outfit messed up.
Another good option is the inflatable neck collars but you still have to make sure they can't get to their surgical site.

Why Shouldn't I remove dew claws?

What are dew claws?
Dew claws are the thumbs and big toes for dogs.
They are attached to the front leg by bone.
Do Dewclaws Have a Purpose?
When dogs run, their front feet often bend to the point where their dewclaws come in contact with the ground. At high speeds (especially when turning) or on slippery surfaces, these dewclaws provide extra traction and help stabilize the carpal (wrist) joint.

Should Dewclaws be Removed?
They should not be removed because of the importance for traction and stability.
If injured they can be treated like other injuries. These potential injuries are very infrequent.

Why do people remove dewclaws?
Misinformation or lack of education.
For show purposes since it improves appearance in the show ring and is required to show in AKC show rings.

Since many of our Red Puppies are used for showing purposes, we do remove their dewclaws albeit reluctantly.

How to Maintain Dewclaws
When it comes to maintenance, dewclaws are no different than your dog’s other nails.

What if my dog needs to put on weight?

1-One of the best things you could do to add weight to an underweight dog or puppy is to give them peanut butter sandwiches.  Typically giving them one half if puppy or one whole sandwich will bulk them up within a month. Make sure to test before giving a full amount of peanut butter....YES dogs can be allergic to peanut products so BEWARE!!!!
2-Increase food intake if possible without force-feeding.  If the average intake is 2 cups per day then try to get your dog/puppy to consume 3-4 cups per 24 hour period.  Adding a squirt of Salmon oil to dry food can boost appetite.

Suggested Schedule (I free feed which means having food and water available ALL the time)
Breakfast: Dry Food (good quality caloric dense)
Snack: Peanut Butter Sandwich
Lunch: Dry Food (good quality caloric dense)
Snack: Peanut Butter & can food mixed with dry food
Supper: Dry Food (good quality caloric dense)
Snack: Peanut Butter Sandwich

When To Change Food?

Changing Puppy Foods
If you want to change a puppy or dog's food follow these steps:
1-75% Old dogfood 25% New dogfood For 1 week
2-50% old dogfood 50% new dogfood For 1 week
3-25% old dogfood 75% new dogfood  For 1 week
4-100% new dogfood

Remember dogs need grains for complete health so choose foods that have grains as a component of ingredients.  The grains can be a good type of grains but without those needed carbohydrates it can lead to kidney problems, built-up tartar, dilated cardiomyopathy, and dental problems among other issues. Some of these issues are serious enough that they lead to death.
How Long Do I Feed Puppy Food???

Puppies should eat puppy food for at least the first year of their life since they are growing and developing all year long.

Puppies continue to change and grow over a 3 year period but the majority of development happens the first year then additional development occurs up to 24 months.
Puppies can continue growing in stature up to 36 months.

Should I request that a blanket or something be rubbed on mom or siblings for adjustment?

This will actually cause puppies to take longer to adjust....puppies' sense of smell are so great that they will smell mom or siblings and look for them and their longing will remain.
It is best to help your new puppy adjust by spending time with them and loving them and offering reassurance that their new home is as loving as the one they left.

Why is my Poodle's hair not very curly?

Did you know Poodles are not born with kinky curly hair.
Did you know that a Poodle's hair will become thicker and curlier the more it is groomed.

These could be the reason that your poodle or doodle's hair is not as curly as you want.  For people getting Doodles but wanting only the curly wavy loose curls minimize having your puppy/dog shaved down or completely groomed.
If you want to keep the loose soft curls have the dog cut with scissors instead of being shaved.
If you want your poodle to have tight curls have them shanved down several times....then you will be able to get that huge fro and other show quality hairstyles.
There are many poodle styles and everyone has their favorite. I have a few that I like best.

Types of brushes to have on hand:
Dematting rake brush
Dematting curved brush
Fine tooth brush
Undercoat brush
De-shedding brush

These work wonders for most types of hair and definitely for Poodles and Doodles.

When Will My Puppy Be Able to Manage Stairs?

Each puppy is different but most should be able to begin managing stairs around 16 weeks of age (or 4 months of age).  They may be able to manage a step or two prior to that but some may not and some may take a bit longer to manage steps than the 16 weeks.  This is just an average.

Red Poodle History

-Red Poodles are Rare and of a faded gene
-Red Poodles come from lines Apricot lines
-The gene responsible for Red coloring is known as the "Rufus" Gene
-The "Rufus" gene seems to act to darken apricots
-The apricot gene is recessive to all others except white
-Color changes are common among poodles as they age out of puppyhood
-Some may darken and others may lighten
-If a red lightens it will be between 1 year and 18 months
-Occasionally the puppy will lighten then darken again before development of adult coat
-AKC only recognized the color in 1980 as an official poodle color
-A true red will have black points.  Liver points are accepted but not preferred.
-It has taken a long time to achieve the amazing red color seen today
-Ilse Konig of Shangri-La Kennels had the idea to develop the red standard poodles
A red may have darker shaded ears than body
Sometimes a dog will have varying shades of red

History of Phantom Poodles

  • Phantom poodles have the same origin as other poodles.
  • Phantoms have a specific pattern on a solid coat.
  • Parti poodle has a coat that is at least 50 percent white with a secondary color in places but no specific pattern.
  • Phantom poodles are thought to be more clever, unique, amusing, or intelligent than their solid counterparts.
  • Phantom poodles must have a solid coat with a different color:
    • Above each eye (like eyebrows)
    • Along the sides of the muzzle.
    • Across the chest in a butterfly pattern.
    • Along the legs
    • Under the tail (butt area)
    • In other words phantom poodles are marked the same as Dobermans, Rottweilers, and such dogs with black coat and brown tips.
      • Poodles, unlike Doberman, come in a variety of colors: Black phantoms can have diffierent color markings (apricot, brown, cream, gray, red, silver, white).

History of Coton de Tulear

-Belongs to the Bichon family which are decendents of the ancient breed, Barbets.
-The Bichon Tenerife, an extinct breed, was introducted to the Canary Islands by the Spanish
--The Tenerife gave rise to several breeds including the Coton de Tulear
-Introduced to the islands off the Indian Ocean where a single mutation lead to the breed developing long hair and being called Coton de Reunion
-These dogs were seen at the ports
-The dogs were black and white, for the most part
-The dog became known as "The Royal Dog of Madagascar"
-During development of the breed the Morondava Hunting Dog was added to the ancestry which gave the dog the stamina and soundness of today's dogs
-Only the affluent were allowed to have Coton de Tulear
-The Coton de Tulear became "The Official Dog of Madagascar"
-In 1974 Dr. Russell introduced the breed to the United States so they are a fairly new breed to America
-The Coton is one of the rarest and most desirable dogs
-The Coton has been featured on Good Morning America and The David Letterman Show with owner Glenn Close
-Many famous people own Cotons including Barbara Streisand, Debra Messing, Jane Fonda, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Debbie and Carrie Fisher, and Glenn Close
-The French bred the color out of the Cotons making them all or mostly all white
-AKC accepts 3 colors (white-sometimes with tan or gray; black and white; and tricolor)
-All white is preferred by show breeders
